I’d like to share with you one of my favorite quotes. I am sure you’ve heard it, but here’s a refresher:
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.” – Theodore Roosevelt
You don’t have to be running a country, or competing for a gold medal or winning a Nobel Prize to fall under the category of “greatness!”
You just have to live your truth. You have to have the courage to change what’s not working. That’s what greatness really is. A call to arms. A commitment to following that whisper from your soul that said, “Do something different.”
This is about not taking the easy path. The people who change the world and leave legacies never took the easy way out. They dared to do something bigger than they thought they were capable of. They dared to change what most of the world thought couldn’t be changed.
Even the folks you have never heard of who are acting in greatness are doing so by setting out to live the best life they can live despite what society or circumstance says is possible.
Where are you playing small? Where is your greatness hiding? It’s probably not as hard to find as you think. And the first step in finding it is telling the truth!
So I would like you to ask yourself these questions:
- What have I not been willing to face?
- What hasn’t felt right in a long time?
- What would I change if I knew for CERTAIN that it would all work out perfectly?
- What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?
