The greatest prison people live in is the fear of what other people will think…
It’s a deep and serious quote but think about it for a moment.
How many times in life have you made a decision based on what made OTHER people comfortable?
I can remember a time when I stopped wearing my favorite turquoise jeans, out of fear to stand out in a crowd of people that wanted everyone to look the same, act the same, like the same things, and basically be a clone of one another. I didn’t feel that I fit in, but lacked the confidence to step out and stay true to myself.
This is truly a tragedy. Other people are on a different journey. They are operating from a different set of values, a different set of programming, different fears, and a different view altogether!
When we choose our path based on the opinions of others, we are essentially living life according to THEM. And then we wonder why it feels like something is missing!
Maybe someone disagrees with your dream or thinks it’s impossible. And it might well be…for THEM. But it’s not their dream, it’s yours! And I encourage you to think of your dreams as a fully funded mission. After all, desires that won’t go away are nudges from the universe, so ASSUME that the universe has already lined up everything you need to succeed.
Here’s another clue. You’ll KNOW you found your right path when validation from others is suddenly irrelevant to you.
You’ll feel so strongly, so confident about your direction that the raised eyebrows and doubts wont phase you in the least. This is what was the case for me. I decided to break that cycle of feeling the pressure to fit in by choosing to wear a turquoise wedding dress for my big day, which had been my dream since I was a little girl, and not wear a white one, as was the common practice. I felt beautiful and the praise for my choice of dress and color (and my mother’s talent in making my dream dress) was unless.
But maybe it’s not fear or the opinions of others that’s holding you back. Maybe you still haven’t zeroed in on what you want! That’s ok.
Allow it to come to you. Listen for the clues. Spend time in quiet so you can hear your soul speak!
