I’ve had a lot going on in the last couple of weeks, including being a single mom while my husband was traveling around the globe for three weeks, building a new website, preparing for a great GiveAway Event that I’m participating in, organizing and hosting my 7 year old’s ninja party and having lots of coaching sessions all parallel to each other. It’s been great and busy! But I’m back with Step 6 to a Portable Career – Brainstorm the perfect Portable Career for you!
In Step 5 to a Portable Career, I outlined the elements that make up a portable career. In short you want to make sure that your portable career is something that you love; reflects your values; is driven by your favorite skills and unique talents; allows you to establish a global network; fulfills your personal needs; fits in with your life’s activities, obligations and responsibilities; allows you to achieve your life goals; is self-motivating; is easily packed into literally one suitcase; and stimulates your personal growth and development.
Keeping these elements in mind the following fall under perfect portable careers (when a match with who you are and your dreams and ambitions):
Thanks to the world of the internet, businesses are often outsourcing their administration to freelancers. If you have a decent internet connection at home there are great opportunities for you as a Virtual Assistant, Customer Service Agent, Sales and Marketing Expert or Accountant and Consultants. Have a look at www.upwork.com to check out your options!
Seeing how much of the corporate and personal branding happens online AND through Social Media Platforms, if you love social media and have a knack for branding then becoming a Social Media Expert may be a great Portable Career for you.
Another option for a good source of income and with the only investment being your computer and internet connection is being a journalist / writer / editor or proof-reader. You can write for local newspapers or publishers, blogs world-wide, public relations materials or eBooks.
Become the expert in using graphic design software and you’ll be able to design and create business cards, company brands, layouts for books and articles, brochures etc. You can then find work world-wide or join the platforms such as www.99designs.com and never be short of work!
Have a passion for transferring knowledge, working with children or adults? Teaching could be your calling. Teaching languages or computer skills, facilitating workshops or sports classes, giving cooking classes or be a tutor. All of this is possible and more, be it locally or online!
Online Trading is a great Portable Career when you love investing in the money markets. You could offer this service to others, teach others how the investment markets work and provide advice on what smart investments are, while simultaneously making money for yourself. Needless to say that this career carries some risk, if you embark on this path make sure you have the expert knowledge and experience that it takes.
Beauty therapist, hairdresser, massage therapist, acupuncturist, psychotherapist, homeopath are all great Portable Careers that are included in this category as long as there is no language barrier. You will need to check if your qualifications are recognized, and even though you need to build a local network of clients every time you move, the demand for services in this category are in general high. In this type of career you will need to master the local language at a decent start up level, but it is a great way to develop your understanding and speaking skills.
Dance, Yoga, Swimming, Boot Camp, Personal Trainer, Tennis… are all great ideas for Sports Coach / Instructor Portable Career Fields. Again, to practice this career, you will need to master the local language at a decent start up level, but it is a great way to develop your understanding and speaking skills.
Become a distributor for companies like Tupperware, Avon, Usborn books, or sell Educational Toys, Jewellery, Health and Beauty Products. You buy your own stock at a favorable price and sell directly to people in your network by hosting parties in people’s homes or at fairs.
I love being a Career Coach and help expat partners and professionals in transition reconnect with their identity, passion and dreams. I can practice this world-wide through Skype and Facetime and also coach face-to-face locally, no matter where I live. Life, Career and Business coaching are popular forms of coaching, though there is an endless list of specialties. You can study to be a coach easily through distance learning programs!
